New Publication: “Il lungometraggio animato in Italia durante la ‘Golden Age’ (1957–1977)”

A new publication is now available, produced within the framework of the FICTA SciO – Figuring the Invisible research project. The article, titled “Il lungometraggio animato in Italia durante la ‘Golden Age’”, is now available in the edited collection La Golden Age dell’animazione italiana. Dal boom economico agli anni di piombo (1957-1977), curated by Stefania Parigi, Giacomo Ravesi, and Christian Uva, and published by Marsilio (Venice).

The study examines the development of Italian animated feature films between 1957 and 1977, a period often associated with the “Golden Age” of Italian animation thanks to the flourishing of studios and creative practices linked to Carosello. Through detailed historical and stylistic analysis, the article explores:

  • the industrial and artisanal dynamics behind the production of animated features;
  • the role of key figures such as Bruno BozzettoGibbathe Gavioli brothers, and others;
  • the balance between local creative identity and international influences;
  • the tension between episodic structure, experimentation and popular genres;
  • the expressive and cultural significance of works like West & SodaVip mio fratello superuomoPutiferio va alla guerra and Allegro non troppo.

By shedding light on these films — some widely known, others nearly forgotten — the article tries to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of Italian animation and its dialogue with broader media histories. The research also resonates with the goals of FICTA SciO, emphasising how animated images interpret and reshape cultural and scientific imaginaries.
